Today's city goes back to the Middle Ages
Zug joined the Swiss Confederation (Eidgenossenschaft) in 1352. The city of Zug goes back to the 13th century but its present day appearance owes much to the rebuilding of the town in the 16th century.
Zug has strong Catholic roots
Zug, like the neighboring cantons of Luzern, Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden (today's Nidwalden and Obwalden) resisted the Reformation and stayed Catholic. In 1506, Peter von Hertenstein, who was born in Buonas Castle on the Western shore of Lake Zug, founded the world-famous Swiss Guard for the protection of the Pope and his residence. The youngest member of its staff is Michael Walser of the city of Zug; he joined the Guard on Mai 6, 2024.
